Nakhon Si Thammarat is one of the oldest cities in the country. The city attracted traders from all over Asia because of its advantageous location: situated on the coast and enriched with resources for living, and drew foreign religions, beliefs, and culture to the people. Because of its rich culture and solid location for trading, this area was once a kingdom called ‘Tambralinga’. Nowadays, local administration utilizes historical sites to promote historical tourism. However, there is no historical study center to provide information about the history of the city. Thus, the local administration and cultural council aim to establish Nakhon Si Thammarat Historical Study Center to convey a comprehensive picture of the city’s history, to educate and inspire local people about their history, to promote tourism in the province’s urban area, and to advocate for the province to be designated as a world heritage site.

This project is situated near Si Thammasokarat Park, surrounded by several historical sites, and ancient walls. This location makes it accessible to tourists and creates a perfect atmosphere for learning the city’s rich history. The design concept of the study center draws on numerous components from the folklore and local arts: material, landscape, and layout plan inspired by the local tales. The study center houses a permanent collection and a seasonal exhibition drawn from seasonal events. In addition, the study center also has a library where visitors can get more information, as well as a coffee shop and a souvenir shop where they can buy products made by locals.
