The Eastern Region Stadium project is located in Na Chom Thian, Chonburi Thailand between Sukhumvit road and the Eastern-line local train railway.
As the main access of the project’s site is divided to both west and east sides, the stadium is proposing to be located at a distance that can create an overall perception of the entire stadium within the human eye. Concerned by the sun orientation, the stadium is rotated 15 degrees counterclockwise from north to make the best orientation for football competition during the daytime. All public road and traffic systems are designed to be located only on the north side, connecting both main roads. Superimposed by elevated walkways that connect to the transit system (local public train station) to avoid chaos from road crossings and also use the space underneath as a parking area.
The stadium is designed as a 40,000 seats (minimum number of spectators required by FIFA) football stadium during the FIFA World Cup event in the future. Which could be converted into a 30,000 seats multipurpose stadium which will be suitable for domestic competition and convenient for long-term maintenance.
The roof’s structure is a circular cable structure system that is very extended and minimal weight compared with other structures. Suitable for covering large areas that do not require air conditioning, especially the stadium in a tropical climate. The structure was developed with an intention to optimize the dynamic load of the cable roof by adding an intersection node of cable, connecting between 2 tension rings and 2 compression rings as known as Concave-convex structure type, adding struts member and horizontal cable brace. Covering are PTFE as a solid material and polycarbonate as a transparent material.
The roof’s covering and the facade are designed based on tropical climate conditions as a louver. Creating full natural ventilation and indirect lighting.
All of the roof’s load is transferred to the compression rings, which behave like a large 3-dimensional steel frame all over the stadium supported by the concrete structure system beneath.
In addition to the date of the competition, which happens infrequently, the exterior space is designed to make this project could be used as a public space as well on a typical day by supporting various public activities, for example, recreational activities, commercial activities, and other sports activities which will create a regular constant of everyday use.
